How I Learned What Most Parents Never See

For more than 35 years, I have dedicated my life to education, helping students discover their potential and guiding families through one of life's most important journeys. Throughout my career, I noticed something that never sat well with me. Students with similar intelligence, talent, and determination often experienced completely different futures. The difference was rarely ability. It was access. Some families knew where to find scholarships, internships, leadership opportunities, and educational resources. Others simply never knew those opportunities existed.
Then my own life changed forever.
In June 2011, I began experiencing symptoms that could not be explained. By August, I suffered a myasthenic crisis that left my body shutting down. I was hospitalized, entered rehabilitation, became wheelchair-bound, and was forced into early retirement from the career I loved after I was officially diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a rare autoimmune neuromuscular disease that affected my ability to walk, talk, chew, swallow, and even breathe.
Everything I had planned for my future changed in an instant.
That journey taught me one of the greatest lessons of my life: tomorrow is never guaranteed, but preparation is always within our control.
Through faith, determination, the support of family and friends, excellent medical care, and the grace of God, I rebuilt my life. Rather than allowing my diagnosis to define me, I chose to let it refine my purpose. I became an advocate, support group leader, mentor, and educator, helping others navigate difficult seasons while continuing to serve families and communities.
